What is Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0?

Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0) is the latest iteration of Toyota’s suite of advanced safety features. TSS 3.0 introduces several upgrades to both the software and the installed technology. Among them is an upgraded front-facing camera that has a higher resolution and wider angles. The improvements to the camera system have a positive effect on features like emergency braking, collision alert, and more. In addition, some vehicles equipped with TSS 3.0 now have the capability for over-the-air (OTA) software updates. What Features are Included in Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0

Pre-Collision System (PCS)

PCS is just one of the safety features the improved camera system impacts. PCS is an emergency braking and collision alert system. It uses front-facing cameras to scan your surroundings for pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and stationary objects. If a collision becomes possible, the system will alert you with audio-visual cues. If corrective action can’t be taken in time, the system will engage the brakes to bring you to a halt.

The upgraded camera system now allows for a wider view that improves intersection support. In addition, to bikes, and vehicles, in some instances, the system can now detect motorcycles as well.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

The LDA system was designed to detect lane departure when traveling above 30 miles per hour. This system works on roads with clearly marked lanes and will use an audio-visual cue to alert the driver if they begin to drift into another lane without first engaging the turning signal. If the driver doesn’t or can’t take corrective action, the system will gently steer the vehicle back to the center of the lane.

What’s New for 3.0?

While the previous system was adept at detecting lane markings painted on the pavement, the new system can also detect other types of dividers, such as guard rails.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)

Toyota’s adaptive cruise control system uses the camera and sensors to monitor the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle directly ahead to maintain a safe following distance when the cruise control is set at a speed higher than 20 miles per hour.

There are now four following distance settings as opposed to three in the last version of TSS. The vehicle detection system has also been upgraded making for smoother speed adjustments.

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) helps keep your vehicle centered in its lane by detecting lane markings and the path of the vehicle ahead. When Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is activated, LTA provides steering inputs to maintain lane position.

What’s New for 3.0?

The upgraded Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) system now includes three innovative features for enhanced safety and convenience. First, it can steer the vehicle within its lane to provide additional space when passing objects in adjacent lanes. Second, the Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is available on models with a driver monitor camera, ensuring the driver’s eyes remain attentive to the road ahead. If the system detects inattention and the driver does not respond to prompts, it can bring the vehicle to a stop under specific conditions.

Road Sign Assist (RSA)

RSA was designed to provide you with enhanced awareness by using a front-facing camera to detect speed limit signs, yield signs, stop signs, and do not enter signs. The system then displays an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display, so that you’re more attuned to your surroundings.

The RSA system can now detect even more signs such as pedestrian crossing signs.

Automatic High Beams (AHB)

The AHB system helps everyone on the road see more clearly. Everyone has experienced the blinding effect of driving toward another vehicle that has high-beam lights on. This system helps ensure that you have the light you need to travel safely but reduces glare for other drivers by toggling between light setting depending on traffic conditions. This system has no notable upgrades for 3.0.

Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)

Proactive Driving Assist is an entirely new feature available on some 2024 and later models. This feature is designed to help drivers manage speed and braking while driving into a curve. It can also use vehicle-to-vehicle detection and the front-facing camera to assist with distance control between your vehicle and the preceding vehicle, cyclist, or pedestrian. It does so with gentle steering and braking assistance that can help prevent or mitigate an accident.

What’s New for 3.0?

This system has three built-in features – Obstacle Anticipation Assist, Deceleration Assist, and Steering Assist.

Obstacle Anticipation Assist detects parked vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists on or crossing the road.

Deceleration Assist provides gentle braking to gradually reduce speed when detecting vehicles, motorcycles, or upcoming curves.

Steering Assist detects road lines and adjusts power steering to help the driver stay within the lane.
